On November 11, 2025, active region AR 4274 produced an exceptionally powerful X5.1 flare at 10:04 UT during the ongoing Solar Cycle 25. As of now, this flare is the most energetic solar eruption of the year 2025. By chance, I had observed the region shortly beforehand in several spectral lines using a spectroheliograph—my spectroheliogram was taken just 23 minutes before the flare. It was actually only a brief scan under modest seeing conditions, but in retrospect it is fascinating to see what the region looked like shortly before such a strong event.
